Before I landed in Sydney, my husband and boys had been sightseeing and exploring every weekend. And I would get endless Whatsapp messages with all the pictures of the amazing places they had been to see. So before I got on the plane I made sure they knew that I expected to be in on the sightseeing action at the very first opportunity. I had serious FOMO and it needed to be fixed…ASAP! :p
Well, they didn’t disappoint me. I landed in Sydney on a Saturday afternoon and at 8am Sunday morning we were at the station ready to start the days sightseeing activities. In hindsight, I probably should’ve given myself a day or two to recover from the jet lag…but I had waited SO long to be part of the fun that there was no stopping me!
Watsons Bay
We caught the ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay, at the southernmost point of Sydney Harbour. Originally a fishing village (the oldest in Australia according to the map of the area at the ferry terminal 🙂 ) Watsons Bay has amazing views of the ocean in one direction and the city in the other.
Coastal Cliff Walk
There is an easy cliff walk in Watsons Bay that takes you to the Macquarie Lighthouse. It has to have some of the most magnificent views of the ocean. Anything that can make exercising feel fun is definitely a highlight in my books and that’s exactly what this walk was. We were so busy looking at the views and peering over the railings at the cliffs and waters below that it didn’t feel like work at all.
Macquarie Lighthouse
The Macquarie Lighthouse was the very first Lighthouse built in Australia. It was commissioned by Governor Macquarie and completed by 1818. Robert Watson was appointed as Australia’s first lighthouse keeper and the town of Watsons Bay was named in his honour.
Being my first official full day in Aus, meant that I didn’t really take as many pictures as I could’ve. I was pretty much awestruck by EVERYTHING around me those first few weeks and I feel like I definitely have to go back so I can REALLY explore this beautiful little town. But as my very first sightseeing stop, it has a special place in my heart. So it had to have one of the first slots in the Travelling Thursday series.
I hope you enjoy these images.
