Sugar and Spice and all things nice…that’s what little girls are made of… or so the nursery rhyme goes and I must admit, these newborn baby girls with their silky soft skin, pink pouty lips and teeny tiny fingers and toes are the epitome of the nursery rhyme!! They are most definitely made of sugar and spice. My previous blog post was all about the sweetest sleeping little boys (which are supposedly made of snips and snails and puppy dogs tails :p ) and I promised to follow up with a post on the littlest girls that I have had the privilege to photograph over the last little while.
As a boy mom and the only girl who lives in my house, I adore photographing little girls. I love seeing their nurseries with all the pretty pink decor. The pink blankets and onesies, socks and headbands. And who can resist a beautiful fluffy tutu? Aaaaah…pink heaven!!
Less is more
One of the things I love to showcase when photographing newborn baby girls or any newborns for that matter, is to make sure the focus is always on baby. Don’t get me wrong, I use props to take a variety of poses of baby in boxes and baskets etc, but I also believe that baby is the star of the show and I love to make sure that our sweet little star is never overshadowed by the props in the image. I love it when moms have an array of headbands or tiebacks and pretty pink accessories that they want to incorporate as it’s a fabulous way to personalise your pictures.
I usually ask moms if they have a favourite or sentimental teddy that they would like to incorporate into the shoot. More often than not, mom has a very specific teddy she’d love to use for the pictures and I make a point of taking at least one full length image of baby with the teddy. This really is one of my favourite things to do because it becomes the first photo of what can become a milestone marker “project” as baby grows. Each week and then subsequently each month, mom or dad can place this same teddy next to baby and snap their own picture (normally for the duration of baby’s first year) and see just how quickly baby is growing.
As new parents things happen so quickly in that first year and most of the time you’re so sleep deprived and overwhelmed at the amount of things you have to do and remember to keep this tiny little human alive :p , that you don’t even realise how quickly they are growing. So this is a fun way you can look back on that first magical year and marvel at how your littlest family member went from helpless newborn baby to mobile tiny person in the space of 12 months.
Baby’s are tiny for such a small amount of time and you never quite remember just how tiny they actually are unless you have beautiful images to help you remember this very special time in their lives. So if you’re on the fence about whether or not to have a newborn shoot, hopefully these sweet little girls will help tip the balance in favour of capturing your newborns first days in all their squishy glory!
